Safety

Check-out is required before use!

The wood lathe is a wood lathe and is only intended for use with wood. Wood is good and anything untreated will be safe to use. See metal lathe for metal lathing, or materials for a comprehensive list of safe materials aside from wood.

The main hazards of the wood lathe are entanglement in the machine, cuts from tools or workpieces, and flying debris from the workpiece. Therefore, the following PPE and precautions are required when using the lathe:

• Face and eye protection
• No loose hair
• No loose clothes or jewelry
• Check and use the lowest speed possible for your work
• Never leave the lathe running unattended
• If it starts vibrating or making unusual sounds, shut it down and inspect
• Practice!

Operation

Set-up

• Move the machine out of the storage location to a suitable work location, give yourself some space away from other tools and people.
• Check the speed and adjust as needed, opt for the lowest speed possible for your work:
  • Switch off, remove switch safety lock, unplug from outlet, engage spindle lock on top of headstock
  • Open side panel to the left of headstock and check speed according to diagram inside
  • Release head lock lever (correct part name?), and lift handle to pivot the motor up releasing the belt tension
  • Disengage spindle lock and manually turn spindle to aid in changing the belt setting
  • Tension with motor weight and lock the head lock lever, close hatch, install switch safety, plug back in

Always check and disengage spindle lock before powering on!

Maintenance

Always clean the machine, tools, and work area after use.
