** In September, we had an incident with someone who arrived during public hours, convincing actual members they were an AHA member (but they were not); and then they were subsequently able to live out of AHA for a couple days.  Eventually we caught on, and they were moved along; however our donation jar money was taken, and there was evidence of illegal activity done by them them found on the public PC.  The situation brought up conversations around our liability for things such as illegal activities being done via our internet account. We spoke with Eli at AADL about this (libraries have a similar "attack surface" as it were), and basically we all came to the conclusion that it's going to be extremely unlikely that we'll be held liable for things people do online through our account when we already have a guest-accessible WiFi access point (plausible deniability), and doubly so when the person doing those illegal things is actually present at AHA under already-illegal circumstances (i.e. breaking and entering).  Some lessons (re-)learned:

*** Empower/educate members on validating another member's membership status (and being validated by other members!), especially when we might not know AHA members equally well.  We do have several members with access who do not often show up in person, so the probability of this situation happening again is quite high, even when the other party is being truthful.  The easiest way to determine membership status is to observe if they can use their membership card to open the door, however it's recognized that this could be considered too confrontational for some folks.  All members must understand that such requests are not meant to be personal attacks or even an inconvenience, but an efficient way to ensure everyone is doing their best to keep AHA, its members, and its resources safe.  Discussions will be ongoing about how to better handle this stuff.

*** Make emptying the donation jar a regular task to be completed at Repairsday/Open Hours/other regular, in-person events at AHA.
*** Mike will ask a friend about deals
*** Mike will still reach out to some legal help recommended by Jame to see if we can sit down with any of them to discuss things related to this, as well as other general liability concerns for AHA that we could have as an all-volunteer organization with limited financial resources.
