What should I know / have done by the end of today?

 Greet people when they come in

 Get up to speed on Safety

Read our Safety Guidelines, this includes information on:

  • What to do in an emergency
  • Where our First Aid Kits are
  • Where you can find Safety Gear
  • How to handle shoplifting situations

 Know how to verify someone's membership in case you need to leave

This is good to know if you are:

  • Closing up at the end of the night
  • Need to leave the shop in the middle of a shift

When there is no one on shift to watch the store, people without keys/codes (typically not members) can NOT be in the shop unless:

  • They are being vouched for by another keyed member.
  • Any keyed member can vouch for a non member, but the keyed member must understand THEY are now responsible for that person

To check to see if someone is a member

  • Ask them to unlock the downstairs front door from the outside for you.
  • If they have a functional key/code, then they can stay.

 Find at least one tool in each section is (Electronics, Craft, Power Tools, Prototyping, Computers, Hand Tools)

A wiki category page of our tools

  • Safety Kits/First Aid!
  • Membership/Liability Forms
  • Soldering irons in the Electronics Area
  • Sewing machines in the Craft Area
  • Utility Knives near the Craft Area
  • Torx Head Screw Drivers in the Hand Tool Area
  • A Power Drill in a bin in the Power Tools Area
  • 3D Printer and LASER Cutting Prototyping Tools
  • Dishes and Paper Towels in the Kitchen/Cleaning Supplies Area
  • Extra Paper in the Office Supplies Filing Cabinets
  • Don't worry if you can't find all these things on your first day  : )

 Where to find information about AHA

  • If it's an emergency/danger, call 911
  • Search for it on the AHA Wiki (Good job!)
  • Search for it on the AHA Website
  • Ask someone around the shop.

 Add yourself and know how to access the AHA members and AHA Staff mailing lists

  • Send an email to the mailing list, or if you really need to know right now:
    • Check out the contact list behind the front desk to call Josh, Nate, Dana, Larry, etc.
  • AHA Public Mailing List
  • AHA Members Mailing List - Click and request to join, any AHA Member can approve.
  • AHA Staff Mailing List - Click and request to join, any AHA Staff member can approve.

 Being awesome

 Have read over this page

  • Your primary goal above all else is to do your best to make people feel comfortable making stuff at AHA
  • Below you will find a laundry list of random things you should work towards. These are things that you should be thinking about, and after your 2nd or 3rd shift should feel comfortable referencing everything in here.

Closing Up/Who can stay?

  1. There is a basic 'closing up shop' list attached to the inside downstairs front door. I don't think that file is online ATM, but it is on the door.
  2. All active paying members have an access code / key. The only way to find out if someone can stay behind is if they have one of those items.
    1. Make sure people are active members by asking them to unlock the downstairs door for you.
    2. Yes, this may be inconvenient for everyone, but everyone knows the drill. Don't worry about bugging someone ; )
      1. If one of those members is willing to vouch for other people, that is fine.
    3. We could use some help maintaining an active members list, if you think you can do this, please contact Larry!

To be categorized

  • When arriving for your shift, turn on the light switch at the top of the stairs, and switch on the 'open' sign
  • Make sure to check whether the door is locked or not - then unlock it!
  • difference between members and non members/how to lock up
  • its okay to be on your computer, but MUST be aware of people coming in and out and greeting them asap.
  • what happens when internet goes out
  • what do I do if I don't know the answer and no one else is around
  • list of general contacts for resources (josh-management and rental. Tyler-3d printer. Dana-kids camps etc etc)
  • knowing where equipment is and house supplies. (Paper towels, cleaning supplies etc)
  • contact information is a plus:
  • who has 24/7 access so you do not have to worry about kicking people out
  • who is in charge of upcoming classes, say for instance a member/nonmember is wanting to take intro to soldering, and they have a few questions but you do not know, who they should contact that's teaching that class (if that makes sense)
